Thank you very much.

It is a privilege to represent Tennesseans in such serious times. As I did as Governor and during my first term in the Senate, I will work across party lines to get results on the big issues, including energy independence, controlling spending, and helping every American have access to affordable health insurance.

I will do my very best to continue to earn your confidence and support.

I've been involved in races from the local level to the federal level since I was a child, and I can honestly say I've never seen anything like it.

I've spent the past two years traveling the state both with and for Senator Alexander, meeting everyday Tennesseans, sharing and listening. I've talked to Republicans, Democrats and Independents, conservatives and liberals, and people who defy labels.

And the thing that's been most interesting to me is how no matter where I go, someone has a story about "Lamar," whether it's from his time walking across the state, his service as Governor or President of UT, or something he's been able to help with as United States Senator.

Lamar Alexander has a long history of service to our state. But none of it would have been possible without your support over the years.

The people of Tennessee deserve a special note of thanks. That's why on Tuesday, Senator Alexander launched his third television ad, "Thank You." I hope you'll take a moment to watch this special message, and then share it with your friends.

We have less than one week until election day, and we'll be calling on you to help us make that final push to put us through to victory.

But right now, I just want to take a moment to share this video with you, and extend my sincerest thank you as well.

In his remarks, he told the summit that [w]e must find ways to use less foreign oil and clean up our environment, and part of the solution to these problems will be found in the cleaner technologies discovered right here in Tennessee.

An Update From The Belmont Presidential Debate

Today, I spent most of the day at Belmont University at the site of the Presidential Debate. It's a great thing for the city of Nashville to have - in just one week, a primetime ESPN football game and such a widely watched debate.

I was live on MSNBC, Fox News, and Nashville's News 2 talking about the upcoming debate:

As one of our closest supporters, you know Lamar Alexander and his record of public service to Tennessee. You remember him as the two term governor who helped improve our schools and brought us the auto industry.
You remember his tenure as U.S. Secretary of Education and as president of the University of Tennessee.

And, by watching our new statewide TV ad and forwarding it to at least five friends, you can help introduce your neighbors to our senior statesman and senator.

Our new ad shows how Senator Alexander has translated his friend Alex Haley's credo - "Find the Good and Praise It" - into progress for our state and our nation. The ad is narrated by legendary soul guitarist and Tennessean Steve Cropper. Make sure to check it out and then send it on to your friends.

Celebrating and Preserving our Nation's History

On July 4, 1776, our nation was born in the words of the Declaration of Independence. And, since that day, Jefferson's Declaration has inspired generations of Americans to fight to preserve the principles of liberty established in that great document.

But today, amid our fireworks displays and family barbeques, too few Americans know much about why we truly celebrate Independence Day. And too few of our immigrants know the history of our nation or the language that helps unite us.

It's time to put the teaching of American history and civics back in its rightful place in our schools, so our children grow up learning what it means to be an American. That's why my first legislative act as Senator was to work across the aisle to establish Presidential Academies for teachers and Congressional Academies for students to train our best and brightest in these vital subjects.

And it's time to recognize that one of America's greatest accomplishments is the manner in which we unite our magnificent diversity and that one very important way that we've done that is by speaking a common language, English. Accordingly, I've written legislation to protect English in the workplace and I've cosponsored legislation to establish English as the national language of the United States.

On this Fourth of July, let's thank those who stand in harm's way to protect the American way of life, and let's work to ensure that our children and those who immigrate here legally can better learn of its crucial importance.

Happy Independence Day.

I've always been a strong supporter of our Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. And we all know that good citizens don't abuse guns; criminals do.

So, today's landmark decision by the Supreme Court to strike down the Washington, D.C. gun ban and to recognize our individual right to bear arms is a victory not only for those who live in our nation's capital, but for all Americans who closely guard their Constitutional liberties.

Celebrating Father's Day

As Father's Day approaches this Sunday, I wanted to share with you a quick story about my dad, Lamar Alexander.

A couple of weeks ago at my sister Kathryn's wedding in East Tennessee, my dad suddenly decided to jump on stage with a bluegrass band to join in the music. He grabbed a washboard, which he used to play twice a week in a Bourbon Street bar when he was around my age, and began strumming the old-time metal instrument with a spoon.

While he hasn't played the washboard much since he toured the state with Alexander's Ragtime Band during his gubernatorial campaign, his unexpected performance was very entertaining and surprisingly well done. Both the band and the wedding guests got a big kick out of this impromptu event, although I wouldn't advise him to quit his day job.

While I can't say that I was fortunate enough to inherit my father's musical talent (despite both of our efforts), I'm grateful this Father's Day that he made even greater efforts to teach me about good manners, hard work and leadership.

REMEMBRANCE AND REDEDICATION

As we spend this Memorial Day weekend with our friends and family, we also take time to remember and to give thanks for the extraordinary sacrifices of our brave men and women serving overseas and at home.

The years following the attacks of September 11, 2001 have called for exceptional vigilance, perseverance, and courage from our service men and women as well as their families. We thank the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have answered the call to service, remember the sacrifice of those who have come home wounded, and honor the memory of the ninety Tennesseans who have paid the ultimate price for freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan.

As we honor the memory of our fallen heroes, we must also continually rededicate ourselves to reaching an honorable and successful conclusion to our military engagements in the Middle East and to properly providing for our returning veterans and their families.
