It's been quite a year in Tennessee politics. I've been involved in races from the local level to the federal level since I was a child, and I can honestly say I've never seen anything like it.

I've spent the past two years traveling the state both with and for Senator Alexander, meeting everyday Tennesseans, sharing and listening. I've talked to Republicans, Democrats and Independents, conservatives and liberals, and people who defy labels.

And the thing that's been most interesting to me is how no matter where I go, someone has a story about "Lamar," whether it's from his time walking across the state, his service as Governor or President of UT, or something he's been able to help with as United States Senator.

Lamar Alexander has a long history of service to our state. But none of it would have been possible without your support over the years.

The people of Tennessee deserve a special note of thanks. That's why on Tuesday, Senator Alexander launched his third television ad, "Thank You." I hope you'll take a moment to watch this special message, and then share it with your friends.

We have less than one week until election day, and we'll be calling on you to help us make that final push to put us through to victory.

In the ad, Senator Alexander thanks Tennesseans for the opportunities they've given him to serve our great state as two-term Governor, as president of the University of Tennessee, as Secretary of Education and now as senior United States Senator.

Tenn. Farm Bureau honors Alexander

The nation's largest state grassroots Farm Bureau organization presented U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander with the American Farm Bureau Federation's Friends of Farm Bureau honor.

Tennessee Farm Bureau President Lacy Upchurch announced Alexander as one of Tennessee's recipients for the honor due to his support and continuous voting record for agriculture, rural communities and Farm Bureau policy. A ceremony was held in Kingsport on Monday.

Nashville: Alexander decries rise of obesity

WASHINGTON During a field hearing in Nashville this week, Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., said childhood obesity has become a national epidemic and called for the nation to find solutions to the growing problem.

Today's children are likely to be the first generation to live shorter, less healthy lives than their parents because of rising rates of child obesity, Sen. Alexander said during the hearing of the Senate Subcommittee on Children and Families.

He said Tennessee has the fourth highest childhood obesity rate in the country. Nationwide over the last 40 years, obesity rates have quadrupled for children ages 6-11 years and tripled for adolescents ages 12-19 years, and childhood obesity costs an estimated $14 billion annually in direct health expenses, he said.

Alexander for Senate announced on Friday that the Veterans of Foreign Wars Political Action Committee has endorsed U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander in his re-election campaign.

Congratulating Alexander in a letter, Larry W. Rivers, director of VFW-PAC, said the endorsement is based on Alexander's "strong support for veterans, national security/defense, and military personnel issues," according to a news release.

Senator Alexander was a leader in ensuring that the 21st Century GI Bill extended educational opportunities to the spouses and children of our troops. Senator Alexander has also introduced legislation to fix the inequity in the current law that treats Tennessee veterans differently from veterans in other states when it comes to the amount of tuition payments.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Political Action Committee is the nation's only major Veterans Service Organization PAC. Alexander deserves second Senate term

The contest for U.S. Senate, Incumbent Lamar Alexander is facing a strong Democratic opponent in Nashville attorney, former Democrat Party chairman and Vietnam veteran Bob Tuke.

It is a race that Alexander says he is not taking for granted, even though polls show him with a solid lead for a second six-year term. That speaks to the competitive nature of the Republican from East Tennessee.

NASHVILLE Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton and retired Shelby County Judge George Brown are featured in two new radio campaign ads by Republican U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander.

A 60-second spot in which the mayor calls Alexander "a true friend of mine and of Memphis" began airing on selected Memphis stations today. "He stands first for what's right, and he's always stood up for Memphis and Tennessee. When Lamar was governor and I was superintendent of Memphis City Schools, Lamar helped us improve our classroom curriculum, reduce red tape and rewarded our best teachers.

Since I have been mayor, Lamar has always been there for Memphis, helping us make our city safer by fighting crime," Herenton says.

"Last March we endorsed U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander of Maryville for re-election. As the Nov. 4 election approaches we would remind readers of our confidence in Sen. Alexander and Second District Representative John J. 'Jimmy' Duncan.

"We think both are moderate, common sense officeholders who should be re-elected.

"We really care not whether they are Democrats, Republicans or Independents. Too many of our nation's decisions today are being made based on political party. We think the two-party system is essential to our form of government but the issues and their solutions cross party lines.

"It is our opinion that the national media have exacerbated much of the division that exists in our nation today with their constant harping or red states or blue states. They need to be reminded this is the United States and our cause is common.
